“Old Fashioned Fouth of July”

The Westport South Beach Historical Society’s popular Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration will be held on the grounds of the Westport Maritime Museum Monday the 4th of July. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Access to the grounds is free.

Sunday the 3rd will also host Family fun activities in a warm up to the classic “Old Fashioned” event on Monday

An old-fashioned family celebration, it’s complete with children’s games for prizes, food, a plant and bake sale, vendors, a cakewalk, live music, raffle and a silent auction.

The U.S. Coast Guard and local military fraternities and sororities open the event with the posting of the colors and the National Anthem at 11 a.m.

The raffle drawings for great prizes that includes a  Westport Winery Gift basket this year. Raffle tickets are $2 each. The raffle drawing will be held at 4 p.m. in McCausland Hall Raffle. You need not be present to win. Be sure that your phone number is on your ticket for contact if you can’t be present for the drawing.

Museum open

While you’re on the grounds, be sure to tour the Maritime Museum where you can explore several rooms on two floors in the former Cape Cod-style Coast Guard Station that depict early life on the South Beach, including the early days of community living, fishing, lumbering and cranberry farming.

Lighthouse lens building

The Destruction Island Lens Building also will be open, providing visitors an opportunity to examine a first order Fresnel lens up close and rotating. The museum and lens building will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 4.

Museum admission, which includes entry into the Destruction Island Lens Building, is $5 for adults and $3 for children under age 12. There is no charge for admission onto the grounds and access to the museum’s gift shop.

The Maritime Museum is located at 2201 Westhaven Drive. You can’t miss it —Just look for the giant 30-ft. by 50-ft. American flag flying proudly over the grounds.

Westport Centennial Calendar of Events

June 26th 3 – 5 PM: Founder’s Day Reception in McCausland Hall
June 27th: noon – 3 PM Free Live Music on the grounds of the Maritime Museum in the Gazebo, The Lady Washington will be open for dock side tours 9 am – noon. Special showing & sale of the artwork of the late Elton Bennett throughout the entire weekend in the Lens Building from 10 am – 4 pm.
June 28th: Free Live Music at the Maritime Museum grounds gazebo, special events & displays, free hot dogs & soda from noon – 2 pm, a book signing from 1 pm – 3 pm by Ruth McCausland of her revised book Washington’s Westport with special sale price in McCausland Hall
June 29th: Fireside Chat/Skit 1 pm – 3 pm in McCausland Hall put on by a few Grayland Players.  Refreshments will be served.
